Your love affair with chocolate just got a whole lot more respectable, thanks to a recent review of skin-loving super foods by our own board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Lisa Donofrio.
In an interview for Faith Middleton’s “Foodschmooze” on the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network, Dr. Donofrio touted the benefits of an array of foods for promoting your skin’s overall health and appearance. Her list is surprisingly long. In addition to dark chocolate, the best foods for keeping your skin in tip-top shape include: olive oil (2 tsp per day is associated with fewer signs of aging); tomatoes and tomato paste (for lycopene, which combats free radicals); kale and carrots (for lutein and zeazanthin, which neutralize free radicals, reducing sun damage); salmon and sardines (for Omega-3 fatty acids which help our skin cells retain moisture); and soy (for decreasing redness and boosting collagen). Also on Dr. Donofrio’s list: the herbs rosemary and thyme, walnuts, oranges and lemon peels, as well as the beverages coffee, green tea, and red wine (in moderation, please! Half a glass of red wine per day will do).
